What's a Profile?

A profile is a set of functions assigned to your layout made specifically for an application. You can save a profile for each type of application you want to use, or use multiple profiles within one application and switch between them quickly for more functions.

How are profiles useful?

Creating profiles for different applications allow for automatic profile switching, which you can toggle in preferences. Automatic profile switching will change your working profile to the correct profile without disrupting your workflow.

Multiple profiles for one application is great for effectively increasing the number of functions per module. Having large kits can get heavy and unwieldy, especially when you have to reach out to use the correct module. Alternatively, you may wish you had just a few more dials. In this case, multiple profiles allow you assign those dial functions to the dials you already have. Go here to see exactly how can you use multiple profiles.

Community

Saving and Loading Profiles

There are many different ways to save and load profiles. You can open a profile with a .plp profile, using the toolbar, keyboard shortcuts or menu bar. PaletteApp also automatically saves your profile once you have selected a profile type. It will reload all opened profiles the next time you start up the app.

Getting started with Quick Start profiles

Unsure of where to start with your profiles? Load some quick start profiles bundled with PaletteApp. To take a look, click on the Quick Start Profiles button on the bottom left corner or go to File in the menu bar. There are also more profiles available for download on our Profiles webpage.

File Extension (.plp)
You can open PaletteApp and load a profile instantly by double-clicking a .plp file.

Keyboard Shortcuts
Windows: Ctrl+S saves the current profile, and Ctrl+O opens a .plp file.
Mac: Command+S saves the current profile, and Command+O opens a .plp file.

Toolbar and Menu bar

The bottom left corner has save (floppy disk icon) and load (open folder icon) buttons. File, in the menu bar, can save and load profiles as well.

Switching Profiles

There are many ways to switch your current profile. Within PaletteApp, you can use the tab bar and click on the desired profile or use keyboard shortcuts. You can also change profiles without opening PaletteApp by using our Palette Profile Switching feature, found in the Button Settings and Dial Settings menus (see illustration below).

Automatic Profile Switching
This preference can be turned on or off under the Preferences window, located under the File menu (Windows) or PaletteApp menu (Mac). When this preference is on, PaletteApp will detect which app you're currently using and automatically switch to a corresponding profile.

Using Keyboard Shortcuts
Use Ctrl+Tab and Ctrl+Shift+Tab (Windows) or Control+Tab and Control+Shift+Tab (Mac) to cycle through profiles quickly with the PaletteApp program in focus.

Button/Dial Profile Switching
You can also assign the Palette Profile Switching function to a button or dial. For more details, read this article.
